Lampshade Research
Adam Frank -
Adam Frank creates some great products that play with and utilise light. I found these while browsing the magma website but then went on to look at his own website. He has a great range of products that project light and shadow, creating an effect you would get from a window, to be used in buildings without windows and also has a range of cut aluminium oil lamps that project their shadows onto the walls.

Papercutting Videos
The first video that has been making the rounds on twitter and certain design blogs, is for the New Zealand Book Council and uses paper cutting animation to promote themselves with the tag line at the end "Where books come to Life" I love how the whole animation has so much detail and the ending is great! (Skinny LaMinx sent me the link)
The second video that was recently sent to me, by Hannah Nunn, is a music video with the artist sat down cutting paper while the viewer can't see what is being cut, then you find out....
I would love to create something of the same scale!

Lampshade - Research
Scott saw my lampshade designs and told me about these papercut lampshade designs by LIQUIDESIGN and they are stocked by magma. He said mine looked better and i think so too! I don't think the lampshades by LIQUIDESIGN are that great, they seem so dull and not very creative. I think the message behind the energy saving one works quite well with the brown bag, but I think the table lamps (the other paper bag designs) would look really ugly just placed on a table while not switched on. Good message but cheap and sloppy looking finish.
Tea brief
My initial idea for this brief was to create a set of mugs/cups that focused on designs that would appeal to a certain audience. I wanted to create papercut transfers that I could apply to the mugs, but as I don't know the process behind ceramic transfers and it is not really a process I want to look into, I changed my brief to create a tea towel design. I have also changed the timing available for the brief, as it is something I could create quite quickly and I have a lot of other briefs, I will do this brief in a day. This will include research, initial ideas, development, final designs and presentation of the final design.
Fairytale booklet - Research
J.K. Rowling - The Tales of Beedle the Bard
The book was originally produced in a limited edition of only seven copies, each handwritten and illustrated by J. K. Rowling and one of them was bought by Amazon.com, ( I found the images below from here too ). I think this is a great collectors item and looks really well made and valuable. After looking into value and handmade publications, i cant help but think that the value generated by this book is mostly due to the popularity of J.K. Rowling. I think the limited colour palette creates a more classy look and having a special box to house it, makes it seem more valuable, plus as you can see in the images, it is handled with gloves on! I think having something limited edition like this creates value and interest, so i would like to create a limited edition papercut of the front cover to go with the book in a specially made box.

I found these images of simple fairy tale silhouette illustrations for a childrens book, from this blog here. I think these illustrations are a great, simple, child friendly way to illustrate parts of a story in a way that children can easily and quickly understand as there is no complicated detail for them to take in.

Antlered Kitsune - A contact of mine on Flickr. Creates amazing fairytale-esque paper cut designs and books too! I think the detail of design with simplicity of style create a great look. I like how she brands her images (even for rough designs and mock ups) and I think it gives them a more valuable feel. I would also like to start this method of branding my work, using my mrYen identity brand style and colours. I think it shows that you care about every aspect of your work and it makes all work seem relevant to the final design. I would like to create this simple style of illustration for my booklet, having the bare minimum detail to get the message accross. I think this is appropriate as my book would then appeal to children, as the illustrations are simple to understand, yet look sophisticated enough for the parents buying the book.
