I recently came across this article with Dieter Rams, on the Design Museum website and I thought he made some great points in relation to what makes good design.
About Dieter Rams -
"As head of design at Braun, the German consumer electronics manufacturer, DIETER RAMS (1932-) emerged as one of the most influential industrial designers of the late 20th century by defining an elegant, legible, yet rigorous visual language for its products"

Following are his "10 Commandments of good design"
Good design is innovative.
Good design makes a product useful.
Good design is aesthetic.
Good design makes a product understandable.
Good design is unobtrusive.
Good design is honest.
Good design is long-lasting.
Good design is thorough down to the last detail.
Good design is environmentally friendly.
Good design is as little design as possible.

These are things that I also agree with, especially "good design is as little design as possible"
I want my designs this year to be a simple as possible, while communicating the necessary message in a clear and concise way. I think this important, while making sure aesthetic is also considered - why design something unattractive ? I want my designs to aesthetically appeal to my audience and make them feel as though they are getting something (a product, information or message) that is delivered in a professional way and shows every detail of the design has been considered.
